Dealing with clogged drains in your home can be quite stressful. It is a complete mystery as to what is happening within your home's plumbing, and you may not know how to best deal with the situation. Here are a couple of techniques you can try to clear those clogged drains on your own.

Use a Snake

One option that gives you a strong chance of clearing the clog is to use a plumbing snake. This tool can be purchased at a local home improvement store, but some places will also rent them out to you. They can quickly clear a clog deep within your plumbing.

The idea behind using a plumbing snake is that you will stick a flexible tube with a rotating blade into a drain, which will cut through whatever is blocking the path of the water. It's also possible to get the snake to grab onto whatever is clogging the pipe and pull the clog out.

Use Chemicals

There are a few types of chemicals that you can put down a drain to clear the clog within it. The first thing you should try is a basic home cleaning solution by combining baking soda with hot water. Just pour some baking soda down a drain and follow it immediately with the water. The reaction can be enough to break up the clog, but if it doesn't, you'll need to move on to something stronger.

Try combining ammonia with boiling water to see that clears the pipes for you. All you need to do is add a teaspoon of the ammonia to 1 gallon of water. It may seem like the ammonia will be diluted, but it can be quite effective. Commercial drain cleaning solutions can be much stronger, with the ability to take on tougher clogs.

One thing to keep in mind when using chemicals to clear a clog is to always have safety in mind. These chemicals can be quite strong if breathed in and can harm your skin if you come into direct contact with them. Always use gloves to protect your hands, wear eye protection, and keep the room well ventilated. If you are working in a bathroom without windows, run the exhaust fan or put a box fan in the doorway to remove the fumes.

When you can't see to unclog the drain on your own, reach out to a local drain cleaning services for assistance. They'll be able to tackle the clog with professional tools that they have access to.
